Historically Red Lipstick Wearing Latinas

Why do we Latinas love full, red lips so much?  Maybe it’s the sexy vixens on the telenovelas who are always seen with a sexy red pout.  Or it was the chola-era when we all lined our red lipstick with black liner.  Perhaps it’s Frida’s iconic red lip stain or Selena’s  “Bidi Bidi Bom Bom” signature red lip. Either way, we Latinas bring a sense of flavor and sex appeal by enhancing one of our best features: our lips!
Young Latina starlets like Demi Lovato, Selena Gomez and Naya Rivera have all utilized this beauty weapon when they want to make a statement.
Let’s take a closer look at how the red lip became a staple in the Latina community.

Frida

A pinnacle in Mexican art; Frida Kahlo sealed all of her self-portraits with a red kiss.  Her art and beauty exists well past death (1907-1954) as her self-portraits are among some of the most recognized and celebrated works around the world. With a red lip color and dark, braided hair, her look signifies feminine strength and character.

Selena

Her beauty features resonated among every young, Hispanic girl.  With her long, dark hair, light skin and a  love for red lipstick, every girl imagined to be her.  She was an amazing woman who represented our Spanish roots while living out the American Dream. The red lip was Selena’s staple.

Cholas

The makeup always consisted of a crimson lip heavily lined with black in addition to thin eyebrows.  It was a sign of power; especially for women related to South Californian gang members.  It gives a harder look-a “don’t mess with ME” face.

“The West Side Story” and Grease

Who could forget Cha-Cha in “Grease” or Anita’s Mambo dance while both flaunting their Latina roots with a red lip.  This certain look has been recognized in American cinema for decades-the white hot Latina woman!
Red is a color that causes change.  It is a symbol of feminine power.

She’s applying her lipstick; I’ve always believed that the universe invented the color red solely for Latinas.
